Bolsward

  • Back

Bolsward was allowed to mint its own coins as early as around 1020 and was granted town rights in 1455. The historic centre has numerous architectural monuments. Bolsward also became a member of the Hanseatic League early on and belongs to the famous Frisian Elfsteden (Elf Towns).

You can almost reach the town centre by boat. Two smaller canals lead to Harlingen (Harlingervaart) and to Leeuwarden (Bolswarder Trekvaart). However, both waterways are only suitable for boats with a clearance of 2.4 m and a draught of ± 1.2 m. The town offers good shopping facilities and also has some restaurants.

You find the fabulous town hall at the Jongemastraat 2, in the centre of Bolsward. The town hall was built in the years 1614-1617. It is a nice example of the northern stile of the renaissance In the town hall there is a local town museum.

You find the St. Martin's church at the end of the Kerkstraat, you can take the street next to the town hall. The church was built from 1459 till 1466, but the tower is at least 100 years older. The church has a very nice and famous organ, made by A. Hinsz in 1781.
